Smart Cities Mission is the most ambitious project of the Central government in which, the government has targeted to develop 100 smart cities across the country. about 20 cities have been selected in the first batch of the Smart Cities Mission to set up Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) with municipal corporations. Full-time CEOs, CIOs and CFOs have been appointed for this.
In the third large smart cities competition, Uttar Pradesh has nominated three cities Kanpur, Agra and Varanasi followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Urban Development Ministry Venkaiah Naidu released the third list of selected cities on Tuesday. The Centre government has announced the name of 27 smart cities from 12 states. The Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that there are 63 cities have participated in the second round competition and finally 27 cities have selected. Of these, 5 cities from Maharashtra, 4-4 from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, 3 from UP, 2-2 from Punjab, Rajasthan, MP and Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Orissa, Gujarat nominated 1-1 cities under Smart City Mission. Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) has shortlisted Agra city as one of the 98 smart cities under the competitive process of ‘Smart City Challenge’. The most awaited 100 Smart City Mission was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 June 2015.
The Municipal Corporation is formulating its own unique vision, mission and plan for a “smart city”- the Smart City Proposal for taking place in the list top 20 Smart Cities which will be declared in next year. The Smart City Proposal will include:
A Bold Vision: Each city must convey its own unique vision that reflects local context, its resources, and the priorities and aspirations of its citizens.
Pan-City Initiative: Cities draw inspiration from smart solutions that incorporate the use of technology, information and data to improve services or results for citizens. The pan-city initiative must touch the lives of many, or potentially all, of its citizens.
Area-Based Development Plan Proposal: This plan will transform an existing place within each city, creating an exemplary for other areas in the city, or across the country, to follow. Depending on local circumstances, cities may choose one of three approaches: retrofitting, redevelopment, or greenfield development.
