Central Govt. to Launch City Livability Index on 23 June

On Tuesday the Union, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that the central government will launch a City Livability Index on 23 June to increase infrastructure development of the urban area. The government has approved Rs 15,475 per capita investment under the new urban scheme in last three years.

The next batch of cities which is included in the smart cities will be announced at a national workshop on urban transformation scheduled to be held in the capital.

The Union Minister also said, “There is a lot of transformation that is taking place. There is a need for behavioral participation… Our version of the City Livability Index will be launched on 23 June.”

The measurement of the city will be based on various parameters including safety, social and physical infrastructure. While addressing a press conference on the initiatives taken by the ministry in the last three years, Naidu said that the total amount of Rs 4,13,475 crores has been approved by the government for improving basic infrastructure of urban areas in our country. In last three, the government has approved Rs 15,475 per capita under the new urban mission.

Naidu also said, “322 AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) and smart cities have acquired Credit Ratings of which 147 have got investment grade while 163 cities in 18 states and union territories have initiated measures for mobilizing resources through value capture financing tools.”

The NDA government has announced three flagship scheme name as Smart Cities mission, AMRUT, and Housing for All mission in June 2015.

Under the Smart Cities Mission, the cities are selected through a competition. In the first phase, 20 cities are selected and 40 more cities will be selected in the next two years. 13 more cities are also included in the first phase in May last year to expand the representation of more and more state in the mission.
